The underlying ebullience and love of life in Brazilian culture is something that has captivated me since I first stepped foot on the boardwalks of Salvador, Bahia.

Berto and I started dating in Brazil during the season of Sao João celebrations.

I remember an evening of music and dancing in the courtyard of the university where he studied and taught. A forro band was playing and the space was alive with couples dancing, song, and laughter. I was excited with the energy and newness of our connection.

It started raining lightly and the band continued, as they were covered with an improvised tarp. The crowd, including us, continued to dance as the rain cooled us off.

Baiao is the name of a rhythm from the northeast of Brazil. It’s associated with the season of Sao João all over Brazil.

Samba, of course, is the rhythm most often associated with Brazilian music. It’s a rich, contagious rhythm of African origin.

In our new release, Baiao Samba, we switch between these two contagious rhythms. The main melody remains a vocalese. Listen for Berto’s signature Brazilian fingerstyle guitar AND debut of his deft vocal percussion on this track. It’s so much fun!
